Visual Search: A Novel Psychophysics for Preattentive Vision
نویسندگان
چکیده
An important component of visual search is the preattentive guidance of attention towards a target item. The purpose of this investigation is to determine a tuning curve for these guidance mechanisms. The experiments utilize an oriented grating to mask preattentive guidance in a visual search for orientation. By systematically varying the orientation of the grating, we expected to determine the tuning curve for preattentive guidance mechanisms. The results, however, suggest that we found a tuning curve for early visual processing of unattended stimuli. Figure 1: Parallel search for a horizontal target among vertical distractors. The target seems to “pop out” of the display.

Efficient visual search by category: specifying the features that mark the difference between artifacts and animals in preattentive vision.
In this report, we explored the features that support visual search for broadly inclusive natural categories. We used a paradigm in which subjects searched for a randomly selected target from one category (e.g., one of 32 line drawings of artifacts or animals in displays ranging from three to nine items) among a mixed set of distractors from the other. We found that search was surprisingly fast...

Recent reports of rapid visual search for some feature conjunctions suggested that preattentive vision might be sensitive to scene-based as well as to image-based features (Enns & Rensink, 1990a, 1990b). This study examined visual search for targets defined by the direction of a luminance gradient, a conjunction of luminance and relative location that often corresponds to object curvature and d...
متن کاملAsymmetries in visual search: an introduction.
In visual search tasks, observers look for a target stimulus among distractor stimuli. A visual search asymmetry is said to occur when a search for stimulus A among stimulus B produces different results from a search for B among A. Anne Treisman made search asymmetries into an important tool in the study of visual attention. She argued that it was easier to find a target that was defined by the...

PURPOSE Damage to the nerve fiber layer or visual pathway might be expected to reduce the efficiency with which the visual system performs analysis of the ever-changing field of vision. The purpose of this article is to provide a further analysis of previously reported data (Loughman J, Davison P, Flitcroft I, Br J Ophthalmol 2007;91:1493-98.) to: (i) determine the sensitivity and specificity o...
متن کاملFrom parallel to serial processing: a computational study of visual search.
A novel computational model of a preattentive system performing visual search is presented. The model processes displays of lines, reproduced from Wolfe, Friedman-Hill, Stewart, and O'Connell's (1992) and Treisman and Sato's (1990) visual-search experiments. The response times measured in these experiments suggest that some of the displays are searched serially, whereas others are scanned in pa...
